It all started with the remote control. A large majority of consumer electronics today require the use of remote controls, devices which have grown increasingly modern and powerful since its invention in the late 70s. There is nothing new that televisions, stereos and DVD player remote controls function as an essential component, but in the last five years is to gaming systems, have made the remote control into an art form.
The first official first-party wireless game controller was the WaveBird controller for the Nintendo Gamecube, released in 2002. The WaveBird's advances have had a lasting effect in the current generation of gaming systems (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii, in the first place) wireless controls are the industry standard.
Furniture design, in many cases to catch up. Many TV stands and cabinets feature wood or frosted glass doors. These can be beautiful, but they interfere with the infrared transmission, which instructed the wireless monitoring. This applies even more for the most sensitive multi-LED sensor, such as on the Wii. Many consumers make the mistake of buying a good-looking cabinet with wooden doors, whether for its classic look, or for lodging security features such as locks, but these people are then forced to leave the doors open all the time on the DVD player, or use video game systems, or even eliminate, to the doors completely, resulting in a piece of furniture, broken or incomplete look. I'm sure you will see these solutions, perhaps you yourself have done it already. Older furniture designers just do not plan for the future, do they have?
There are other considerations too. Many current pieces of audio-visual furniture make use of transparent glass doors, which is a good solution for the remote problem, since they do not block infrared transmissions. Glass is generally a characteristic of transitional and contemporary furniture, it is very popular for its neutrality, as subtle as looking for a house window, or as futuristic as a space shuttle windshield. Most furniture today is tempered glass variety, which is difficult to scratch and even harder to break, making it a safe solution for a family living room.
But the only thing that does not offer glass concealment. If you are an OU genius, a typical game and electronics, is a repository for wires and cables, and manuals and controllers. Fun, but not show anything, when grandma comes to tea, unless your grandma loves Halo 3 (and if it does … Give her a hug, courtesy of Cymax).
A growing number of entertainment centers designed doors missing altogether. This solves the problem of the door, but even here, the concealment problem arises – and this time with even less security. You will not be able to hide electronics, circuits and equipment, if needed, like a surprise visit from the little cousin who eat your Oreo Reservoir Dogs DVD as a last attempt. You must keep your stand ship-shape the whole time instead of the door to an unsightly cable clutter. What will you do?
Do not worry, you can have both. Clear glass, frosted glass or wood doors are all viable solutions thanks to infrared technology. If you are a classic style at home or the desire furniture with opaque cabinet doors, infrared kits are a good choice. IR-extension technology is already since the 80s, but is often seen as entertainment solution, since IR extender has been overlooked generally developed by third parties.
An IR extender generally consists of a small receiver on a shelf or table, the IR signals from your remote catches and sends (via wire or radio wave, the walls and door handles), set up your electronics. This works even for sensitive controls, take the immediate response time. The Wii, for example, has an official infra-bar, which can be placed anywhere. With an IR extender virtually any type of living room furniture is a great addition to a gamer's living room.
All this leads to a large number of options for your home electronics.
